Winning the Buy Box is not the same as being the cheapest

Amazon does not hand the Buy Box to the lowest price. It weighs how fast you deliver, who ships it, whether you will still have stock, and how you are rated. Price is one input among several.

The Buy Box is the featured offer on a listing, and price is only one of the inputs Amazon weighs. Fulfilment channel, delivery speed, seller metrics and availability all count. That is why the cheapest offer does not always hold it, and why matching a competitor's price does not reliably reproduce their result.

The race to the bottom is a losing strategy on purpose

If your repricer only knows prices, the only move it has is to go lower. Against a competitor who follows every cut, that ends with both of you at the floor and neither of you making money — and often the Box still goes elsewhere, because the other seller ships faster.

The way out is not a cleverer discount. It is knowing why you are not winning. A slower delivery promise cannot be fixed with a lower price. Being out of stock next week cannot either.

What actually decides it

SignalWhy it mattersDoes the API report it?
Listing priceThe obvious one, and the least decisive on its ownYes
Fulfilment channelPrime eligibility changes the comparison entirelyYes
Delivery promiseA faster promise can carry a higher pricePartially
Rival stockTells you whether that price survives the weekNo
Seller rating and its volumeA perfect score from one review is not a signalPartially
How that rival reacts to a cutDecides whether cutting achieves anything at allNo

The last two are where most of the money is, and they are exactly what a tool wired only to the API cannot see. SellerFlow reads the live offer panel and keeps its own record of how each competitor behaves.

Winning it once and keeping it are different problems

Taking the Box with a cut is easy. Holding it while recovering margin is the hard part, and it is where most repricers quietly leak money: they climb back on a schedule, lose the Box without noticing, and stay there.

SellerFlow does not raise a price unless current market data confirms the position holds, and for every product it remembers the price that actually held the Box before. When it climbs, it climbs toward a number that has already survived the real market.

What this page deliberately does not include. The thresholds, the calibrated ceiling per delivery advantage and the exact behaviour against a competitor who follows every move. Those are the product, not the marketing.

Frequently asked questions

Why am I not winning the Buy Box even though I am cheapest?

Because price is one input among several. Amazon also weighs fulfilment channel, delivery speed, availability and seller performance. An FBA offer a little more expensive can beat a cheaper seller-fulfilled one on delivery alone, which is why undercutting further often does not recover the position.

Does a repricer guarantee the Buy Box?

No, and any tool that promises it is describing something it does not control. Amazon decides. A repricer can put your offer in a position where it is competitive on the inputs it can influence; it cannot make the decision for Amazon. A recorded price decision is not a Buy Box win.

How do I know whether I actually hold the Buy Box?

It has to be observed rather than assumed. SellerFlow reads the live offer panel to see which offer is featured, rather than inferring it from price. Where it cannot establish the answer, it records that it does not know instead of guessing.

Is it worth chasing the Buy Box on every listing?

Not always. Winning it below your cost floor buys volume at a loss, and on some listings the featured offer is held by a seller whose delivery you cannot match at any sensible price. Deciding which ones are worth contesting is a margin question before it is a pricing one.
